The Calgary Buffaloes needed a white knight to rescue them from their round robin doldrums and, no surprise, it was a familiar face that rode in and saved the day Friday against the Moncton Flyers.  Captain Chris Collins, the team’s leading scorer during the regular season, scored the game’s first two goals and added an assist to spark the Buffs to their best effort in the last three games. The Calgary Buffaloes lost a heartbreaker last night at the Selkirk Recreation Complex in their third game of the Telus Cup national midget championship.  They led 4-2 at the second intermission, but a series of miscues in the last period allowed the Thrashers to score four straight goals.  A last minute tally for the Buffs pulled them within a goal, but the Calgary squad was unable to pot the equalizer. They came, they autographed pennants, they lost a hockey shootout against six year-olds – and they conquered the hearts of students at a small school on the outskirts of Selkirk, MB.   Part of Hockey Canada’s Telus Cup festivities is a partnership between each of the six teams and an area school. A tie game is usually not considered a success, but when it comes against the favorite to win the Telus Cup tournament, Coach James Poole of the Calgary Buffaloes isn’t complaining.  If not for penalty trouble late in the third period of Friday’s match in Selkirk, MB the Buffs might have won the game 4-3.  Continue Reading
