Todd King, playing lead guitar, Ben Kelsey on drums, right, and Brian McCullough on keyboard and bass, make up Stratabuse

Making a living as a professional musician in Calgary can be a tough gig.  Ask Todd King.  He moved from P.E.I two years ago and at first had to sell cars to make ends meet.  Six months ago he formed a power trio called Stratabuse with locals Ben Kelsey and Brian McCullough.  Regular gigs are finally becoming more frequent and the group is a staple on the Calgary jam scene, playing regularly at venues like The Rusty Cage Central on 37 Street SW. Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits play to over-flow crowd at Deerfoot Inn and Casino

Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits play to over-flow crowd at Deerfoot Inn and Casino

Classic rock shows are usually about the tunes.  The musicians are a bit long in the tooth now and putting on a “show” isn’t as easy on the joints as it used to be.  Not so with Peter Noone.  The lead singer of Herman’s Hermits, the ‘60s British pop act, borrowed from old English musical hall to entertain the standing room only crowd at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino last night.  Mr. Noone’s performance was a mixture of cover songs, hits from the Hermits’ reign at the top of the pop charts in the mid-60s and cheeky Benny Hill-style comedy.  It’s not every singer who jokes about his mother’s boobs and elicits a roar from the crowd.  Continue Reading

John Berry along with has guitar before heading out on the road again

John Berry alone with his guitar before heading out on the road again

By Markham Hislop

John Berry is a man brushed by good fortune, someone who has never forgotten his roots – never risen about his raising, as Southerners like to say.  Mr. Berry’s humility, his ability to reach out and connect with his audience, combined with a powerful tenor voice and a great band made for a fine show at The Chrome Showroom of the Deerfoot Inn and Casino last night.  Continue Reading
