Last week, Calgary enjoyed the sights and sounds of the 19th annual Afrikadey festival, which commenced with an opening gala on Monday, August 9 at Republik. Throughout the week, events ranging from a Remesha drum session at Olympic Plaza, an African dance workshop at the Art Gallery of Calgary, to a symposium about the power and purpose of music at the Central Library were found throughout the city. 100 years ago, a small minority of Chinese immigrants founded a neighborhood where they could create community with each other in Calgary, carry on with Chinese traditions, and start a new life as Chinese-Canadians. This weekend, Calgary saw the community of Marda Loop transformed into a New Orleans Mardi Gras celebration, complete with Cajun music, Creole cuisine, and all the shades of purple, green and gold that one would find in Louisiana. What do you get when you combine an array of performers, ranging from novice actors to seasoned theatre veterans, Calgary’s oldest community, and a selection of almost every type of theatre imaginable? You get Calgary’s annual Fringe Festival, now in its fifth year. The event runs from Friday, July 30th to Saturday, August 7th, and features 27 indoor theatre artist companies from around the globe. The festival prides itself on four principles: 100% unbiased, unjuried, uncensored, and 100% of ticket sales ( prices are set by the artist) go back to the artist, something unique to the Fringe. Whether you were there to watch the beauty pageant, test the variety of salsas, or check out the many booths of clothes, jewellery, and much much more, the Sun & Salsa Festival 2010 was a hit for the thousands of people who showed up in Kensington on Sunday, July 25. The sun was hot, but the salsa and the Latin bands and dancing were hotter. Crowds filled with families could be seen grinning from ear to ear, some dancing on the streets, others selling their wares or performing in the heat in the streets of Kensington. Continue Reading
