Calgary’s most popular one-act play festival will be hitting the stage at the Pumphouse Theatre for three days beginning March 17. Calgary will host five days of “sonic discovery” next week as The Happening Festival of New Music and Media takes place at the University of Calgary. Celebrating its ninth year, the festival will feature a variety of composers and performers, made up of students, staff and professionals in the field. A New York gallery is holding the first online art auction using Twitter, the popular social media tool, and the works of six Calgary-area artists are included. Gary Brant, director of Galerie St. George, an artists’ cooperative on Staten Island and the founder of 140 Hours of Fame, says his New York customers “have been highly receptive to Calgary artists” and he expects them to do very well in the auction. Comedian Daryl Makk uses comedy to bring people together
It sounds like the beginning of a bad joke: what happens when a stand-up comedian is injured in a motorcycle accident? In the case of Daryl Makk, it’s no joke; it’s reality. In April of 2008 the comic and motorcycle enthusiast was hurt in a hit-and-run accident when another driver carelessly changed lanes, knocking him from his bike. Mr. Makk found himself hospitalized with a broken collarbone and cracked ribs. His new bike took a beating, too, and was written off as a result. Continue Reading

Crowds ring bells to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural on 17th Ave. S.E.

Southeast Calgarians turned out for the unveiling of a new mural today in the Greater Forest Lawn area, at an event organized to coincide with the 2009 International Day of Peace. International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) executive director Alison Karim-McSwiney was on hand for the unveiling of the piece, which she said was designed in consultation with local stakeholders. It’s not quite Lana Turner’s discovery in a Hollywood drug store, but young Calgary photographer and musician Alicia Hoogveld must feel just as star-kissed after being “discovered” on Twitter and signing with New York gallery Galerie St. George as their featured artist in September. The twenty-four year old recently graduated from Alberta College of Art and Design.
