Over 200 Calgary area high school students were manning their tradeshow booths and hawking their wares Saturday at the Southcentre Mall as part of Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta’s Company of the Year Competition. The 14 student business teams have combined sales of over $17,000, with many of the teams already past the critical break-even point after which they starting making a profit. Continue Reading

Action was fast and furious up on the Flames Central stage

Organizers are calling the YYC4Haiti fundraiser at Flames Central Thursday night “a huge success” after packing the establishment on Stephen Avenue with over 1,000 people and raising more than $25,000 for Red Cross relief efforts. Unfortunately, the Flames lost in a shoot out to the Phoenix Coyotes on the PPV big screen, but that didn’t dampen the crowd’s enthusiasm. Master of ceremonies Steve Pollard led the charge, keeping the event moving along briskly, occasionally taking advantage of breaks in the hockey game. Continue Reading

A horrific sexual assault on a six-year old girl in Surrey, B.C. last summer has Vancouver police looking in other provinces for the perpetrator. The Vancouver Police Department recovered DNA material from the crime scene and have matched it to other assaults in the Lower Mainland. There is no Calgary connection to the crimes, but police are worried the rapist may have moved to another jurisdiction because of the intense media scrutiny in B.C. Continue Reading

YYC4Haiti began life 10 days ago as a casual Twitter chat by three Calgary media personalities concerned about the disaster in Haiti, and has since blossomed into a major fundraising event that organizers believe will pack Flames Central Thursday night and raise a significant amount of money for Red Cross relief efforts. Alex Ruiz, one of the original tweeters, says she is amazed at how the city has rallied behind YYC4Haiti in such a short time.
