CONFUSION MARS CMRA ENDURANCE RACE, BUT GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP TRIUMPHS IN END

Who’s was on first?  It wasn’t clear when the CMRA endurance race wrapped up Saturday afternoon at Race City.  No one was quite sure because of confusion in the hot-pits about how long the 60 minute session actually was.

At first, officials called out the end time to be quarter-to-five.  Then, with roughly five laps left, it was determined there was still ten minutes left in the race.

And they're off! The start of the CMRA endurance race Saturday at Race City

This provided for some very crafty strategy by some of the racers who were stretching the limits of their fuel usage. Team Gorilla rider, Mikal Zottmann put in one too many laps, and was forced to limp the bike into the pits after the engine fluttered out on the front straightaway from loss of fuel. Zottmann managed to shake the bike enough to get fumes built up and fluids moving around in the gas tank so that he could get the bike fueled. The pit crew loaded the bike with fuel and Brad Gavey saddled up.

Gavey managed to catch up with the #345 Yamaha R6, piloted by Clint McBain and Dan Gregory. At one point, Gavey was seen frantically pointing to his gas-tank as he rode past the pit wall. Gavey was forced to pit with only three laps left in the race, take on fuel, and switch riders again. The 32 second pit stop put Gavey and Zottmann 12 seconds behind the new leader, Gregory, and diminished the 20 second lead.

The last-lap flag came out, and it looked like the Gregory/McBain team had a win in the books.

The confusion began after Starchuk and Zottmann passed the finish line, with the last-lap flag waving for a second time. This was enough for Zottmann to pick up the six-second differential and execute a pass on Gregory in the last corners of the track.

The checkered flag was out for good this time, with Gavey and Zottmann the apparent winners, and the Gregory/McBain bike taking second place. The #33 “Fire Breathing Rubber Ducky” team, fronted by former CMRA President Tim Johnson, looked to be in third place.

When the results rolled in, however, it showed Gregory and McBain in first, Johnson in Second, with the Gavey/Zottmann combo in third. The results were under official video review and not immediately available.

Sportsmanship was the order of the weekend, though, and racers could be seen throwing high-fives and laughing about the ambiguity of the results.

The weekend continued with a big win from Rob Darlington of Hardnox Racing in Middleweight Superbike, who clocked a phenomenal best-lap of 1:19:508 on a Yamaha R6. Tom Bodrovics took second place, with Chad Swain in third.

Open Superbike saw Mike Zottmann take first place, Pete De Graaf in second, and Peter Meier in third.

Lindsey Redfern takes a corner during the Ducati Cup

Zottmann says the bugs from Superbike Nationals weekend had been worked out, and they had pretty much locked down the championship points for 2010.

Ducati Cup saw Ryan Taylor, of Taylor Racing in first place, Jason Yuers in second, David Dunbar in third, Brad McDougall in fourth, and Lindsey Redfern, a recent transplant from Missoula, Montana, in fifth. Taylor said he was impressed with the weekend results.

“I got here really late on Friday night, I work out of town and got back just in time. It was worth the long drive.”

An upbeat Redfern said “It’s my first season out here, and I’m having an amazing time. The community here is really amazing, and I’ve had lots of help. There’s really great people here in Calgary” Redfern moved from Montana recently to head up sales and marketing for Calgary Ducati, the CMRA title sponsor for the 2010 season.
