Racers were a little tense Saturday evening as heavy rain clouds hovered over the Race City drag strip, threatening to cancel yet another weekend of racing.  But by 7 p.m. the sun poked out of the clouds, CDRA organizers gave the thumbs up and the roar of unmuffled engines rolled across the track.

Last weekend’s CDRA event was cancelled due to snow and rain, said Calgary Drag Racing Association president Andy Hockin, who feared the weather was not going to be very cooperative this race season.

Attendance at Saturday’s event was light and Hockin says that was partly due to competition from the Power to the Pavement event in Medicine Hat.

Mike VanDerseen's 9 second 1967 Chevy Nova

Regardless, Saturday’s drag racing schedule carried on with its usual adrenaline pumping action.

The fan favorite of the day was clearly Mike VanDerseen in his 1967 Chevrolet Nova.  The car may look unassuming, but once VanDerseen fired up the engine, gasps could be heard from fans as the beastly machine skated sideways, back and forth down the track to a 9.76 second quarter mile, at over 153 miles per hour.

VanDerseen won the Outlaw Heads Up class with that last run taking home a little bit of cash, and having impressed everyone in the bleachers.

The winner in the King of the Hill bracket race was Kale Prystupa in his 1972 Chevrolet Vega. Kale’s repeatedly solid reaction times, combined with a precision dial-in time crowned him king for the night, beating out over 20 other competitors. Kale’s best run was 11.05 seconds at 121.05 miles per hour.

Matthew Pull of Calgary won the Davenport Motorsports-sponsored Street Challenge with his 1984 Ford Mustang 5-litre in the final round against Ron David’s 2010 supercharged Dodge Challenger.
