Today’s mompreneurs are so much more than tupperware and makeup. On Saturday entrepreneurial moms from across Calgary and southern Alberta came together for the sixth annual Calgary Moms Trade Fair . The event showcased stay-at-home moms and their businesses.
While many of the exhibitors were ‘ in home party’ businesses, the show featured a variety of exhibitors ranging from local authors to educational scholoarships, candles to first aid training. The Radisson Hotel conference room was filled with opportunities for moms to stay involved in the work force in a way that supports their family financially, but also allows them to be with their kids and maintain those always precious adult interactions.
The Calgary Moms Trade Fair has really taken off. Organizers plan to hold four trade fairs in 2010. This is the fifth year for the event.
“We had one per year, and then we gradually grew to four per year, our next show is in September. For the most part they are all home based businesses to help stay at home moms.” explains fair organizer, Britt Raposo.
Not only could fair goers find business opportunities but many exhibitors offered samples and mini-treatments. Beauty control At Home Spa Company offered a complimentary rejuvenating hand treatment to attendees.
“Products are spa quality, face products, body products, lip, hands, and eye products and make up; the company has been around for twenty seven years. At Home was the first to invent the at home spa. I’m proud of that because you go in and people might be tense or stressed and you give them a gift. Then they are relaxed, everyone gets pampered,” explained Coreen Kieser, Beauty Control At Home Spa Company exhibitor.
This was the second time Coreen had been an exhibitor at the Calgary Moms Trade Show: “The leads are great, and people are interested in different things. I see so many women looking for something, and there are so many choices here.” Coreen says.
Denise Leckie, the sole Canadian distributer for the American company SkyBagz Inc. was a first time exhibitor at the Moms Trade Show.
“This show has been really positive; I find a lot of the women that are coming here are looking for the business opportunity as opposed to just coming and shopping,” Denise said.
Over five hundred new moms, expectant moms, grandmas and grandpas, as well as the odd father, took in the show that ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The first one hundred and fifty people through the door received a gift bag filled with a variety of samples, coupons and business information all of which were donated by the exhibitors.
The next Calgary Moms Trade Fair will be held in September and registrations are already begin accepted. Exhibitors from Saturday have the opportunity to register first and open registration begins June 13. Organizers say early registration is recommended as spaces fill quickly.
