The San Antonio Riverwalk is one of the hottest destinations in Texas.  This world renowned tourist destination, inspired by the city of Venice, is now the inspiration for a British Columbia development.  Statesman’s Royal Bay on Vancouver Island brings the riverwalk to Canada.

The Royal Bay site is 20 minutes from Victoria, offering a stunning southwest exposure of the ocean and the city.  The development will also include a gorgeous undeveloped beach, easy access to local golf courses, a marina with slips for 300 boats, a spa and hotel and conference centre.  But the centrepiece of this unique development will be the riverwalk, modelled after the famous riverwalk in San Antonio, Texas.

The beautiful San Antonio riverwalk is the hub of the city

The riverwalk is a series of connected pedestrian walkways leading to the economic heart of San Antonio.  The riverwalk is renowned for its restaurants, shops, hotels, theatres, museums and a host of other attractions that line both banks of the river.  The city has restricted major chain businesses from the riverwalk in order to maintain its unique and local atmosphere.

Most businesses along the riverwalk maintain both street entrances and river entrances because the pedestrian corridor is located below street level.   Riverboats travel up and down the waterway both as taxis and as tours.  The area is accessible by foot only.

The San Antonio River, which feeds the city and once brought water to the Alamo, suffered from frequent flooding that often caused damage to the city since its settlement in the early 1700s.  After a major flood in 1921 the riverwalk had its birth.  During the 1920s San Antonio built a series of flood control measures that were integrated with a retail design by architect Robert Hugman.

Hugman proposed a commercial site, which he called “The Shops of Aragon and Romula,” along the bend in the river. It was to feature local businesses, including his office.  People were sceptical because of the river’s flooding history, but Hugman received city approval.  Many of the structures started then laid the groundwork for today’s development.

San Antonio Riverwalk's vibrant night life.

Today, The riverwalk is the site of many of the city’s festivals.  The first river parade was held in 1936 in honour of Texas’ centennial.  Now, regular festivals are held along the river’s banks.

  Royal Bay: Canada’s first riverwalk

The Royal Bay river walk will be dedicated to foot traffic, dinning, entertaining, shopping and tourists.  For the locals, it will be an area for recreation and services.  With a health clinic and spa, hotels and a wedding pavilion set to open alongside the shops, the Royal Bay riverwalk will be a one of a kind destination.

The site has been idle since Lehigh Northwest Materials ceased operations of its gravel mine in 2008. The land was then reclassified from commercial to residential.  This site, which includes an undeveloped beach, offers a stunning southwest exposure of the ocean and Victoria.

The city of Colwood lies just south of Victoria, making it Canada’s southernmost city.  Since the mine’s closure, the city has entertained many development plans; none of which were approved, until now. Royal Bay will combine cutting edge Green building standards with unique services and surroundings.  This is the ideal spot on Vancouver Island.
