Hashtags are an important search tool used in Twitter. They create keywords for the search engines. By placing a # before the word, you can be sure that users searching for that topic find you.
For example, if you’re looking for information on the Olympics, the hashtags are #olympics or #van2010. There are hundreds of different hashtags so it will take some research to find out which ones will work for you.
The site wthashtag.com is a great tool to add your hashtag and find out more about what they mean. There is also a bot (@wthashtag) that you can send a direct message to to find out what a hashtag means or to submit yours.
The benefits of hashtags are infinite; the biggest being that it helps people find you and helps you find the people that are tweeting about what you want to know. You could find out everything that went on during the Vancouver Olympics. Just search #van2010!
