Sparkling coloured gems have been used in jewelry for thousands of years 

When most people think of coloured gemstones, they think of birth stones.  With the amazing variety of gems, who chose those twelve to be special?  Most scholars agree that this tradition dates back to the “Breastplate of Aaron”, a religious garment inlaid with twelve stones representing the twelve tribes of Israel, the signs of the zodiac, and the months of the year. 

Traditionally colour was the main classification for these stones; therefore, the birthstone list is different between cultures and times. But what about all of the other coloured stones available?

With the exception of birthstones, coloured gem stones are often forgotten in favor of the diamond, but their unique beauty can be the perfect accent to reflect your personality and taste.  Caution: coloured stones do have seasons. 

According to Jeff Nechka of Premier Gems, colour preferences tend to follow fashion trends.  If you have your favorite, wear it with pride.  However, if you are looking to try something different and shake things up, look to current fashion to help you select your colour.  Vibrant and bright are always in style.

The colour of a stone is determined by nature: how light interacts with the crystal and what elements make up the stone.  How brilliant that colour appears is determined by your gemologist. 

Gemologists are expert advisers who determine the best cut for a particular stone.  They can also advise as to settings and coatings that can enhance a stone’s natural beauty, says Mr. Nechka. 

When the gems come out of the ground they look like transparent rocks.  The skilled gemologist takes them from a rock to a piece of art.
