STRIPPER POLE HOME PARTY, ANYONE?

STRIPPER POLE HOME PARTY, ANYONE?

Crystal Hudec, left, receives pole dancing instruction from Christie Mawer
By Markham Hislop

Stripping is moving out of the clubs and into homes across Calgary.  Well, the pole is.  Home pole parties are all the rage these days.  Women are having a great time learning how to pole dance and enjoying a surprisingly vigorous workout, says Bad Kitty business owner Christie Mawer.

Mawer is based in Edmonton, but often travels to Calgary to put on shows for her growing clientele.  She says a pole party is perfect for women who want to explore their sensual side in a safe and supportive environment.

“My focus is always how you feel.   Are you feeling good?  Are you enjoying yourself?  Not are you doing the moves perfectly,” she said.  “As long as you’re not going to hurt yourself or break an ankle, then it’s all good.  I like to encourage the women to play.  And when they’re playing their sensuality just comes out naturally.”

Mawer’s pole is named Romeo, for obvious reasons.  She arrives with Romeo packed in a case, a box full of sexy props and some equally sexy music.  All in the name of creating the right mood to have fun.

And for that reason men aren’t allowed into the class.  She says they can have their own, but the dynamic of the room changes the moment a man walks in.  Instead of being relaxed and comfortable, women become self-conscious and a wee bit competitive.  But that doesn’t stop the men from trying, she laughs.

“I have many questions from men.  Many requests.  Can I be your pole boy?  Can I come and clean the pole?  Can I be the pole?  Yeah, it happens.”

The most common reactions from women after the party are, how shy they were at first and how much fun they had.

“I also get a lot of comments about my style,” she said.  “That I’m very easy to work with, and make people feel comfortable right away and that they’re willing to play because I’m playful,” she said.

Tammy Johnston hosted the pole party in her family room.  She says the attraction of pole dancing is having fun with a gang of her girlfriends.
