Contrary to earlier forecasts by economists, the United States’ entry-level job market for the first half of 2010 will be better than expected. According to a survey conducted by entry-level job site CollegeGrad.com, 2009 is experiencing the second largest projected increase in entry-level hiring. Its list of Top Entry-Level Employers represents close to 158,000 jobs.
Verizon Wireless heads the list with 13,000 entry-level jobs, followed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car (8,000); Internal Revenue Service (5,000); Progressive Insurance (4,200); DDP Holdings (4,000); Teach For America (4,000); Deloitte & Touche USA LLP (3,051); Hertz (3,000); and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (2,950).

Federal jobs in every state
Few people realize how many career opportunities the federal government offers. It is the largest employer in the US, hiring about 2.0 percent of the nation’s civilian work force. It employs more than 2,715,000 workers and hires hundreds of thousands each year to replace civil service workers that transfer to other federal government jobs, retire, or stop working for other reasons.
Federal government jobs can be found in every state and large metropolitan area, including more than 200 countries. The best news is that the federal work force is turning over. The average age in the federal workforce is approximately 53. Fully 50 percent of the workforce is eligible to retire in the next five years. That translates to exciting opportunities in the federal government.
In the past, applying for any government job involved a frustrating three-stage process. First, your resume was screened before it was sent to the hiring agency. Second, you waited and preyed you weren’t evicted or die of starvation before you were called. Third, if lucky, you were summoned for an interview at the agency with the job opening.
The entire application process now takes a few weeks at most, and as little as a few days depending upon demand.
