CITY'S ANIMAL SHELTER OVERFLOWING WITH LOST CATS AND DOGS

There are 52 cats and 23 dogs currently sitting in The City of Calgary Animal Services shelter waiting to be adopted into new homes or claimed by their original owners. It has been a long wait for a black cat like “Vulcan” who has been in a kennel since June.
“This is very frustrating. If these cats and dogs were licensed, they wouldn’t be sitting in our shelter,” says Bill Bruce, Director of The City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services. “When lost and roaming pets have licenses, we are able to quickly return them to their owners.”

The health and safety of pets is why Animal & Bylaw Services is running a licensing campaign from Nov. 9 through to Nov. 30.

The campaign is aimed at educating Calgarians about the value of pet licensing and offering unlicensed pet owners a break on the cost of purchasing a license.

Pet owners who have never previously licensed their dog or cat can get a free six-month dog or cat license by phoning 3 -1-1 or by going down to the  Animal Services Centre at 2201 Portland Street S.E.

As well, for citizens whose pet’s license has lapsed, they can renew their license with no questions asked and no back charges. These owners do not qualify for the free six- month license; however they will avoid a fine. These owners can renew their pet licenses online at calgary.ca/animalservices, by phoning 3-1-1, or in person to the Animal Services Centre at 2201 Portland Street S.E.

All dogs and cats residing in Calgary must be licensed at three months of age. To take advantage of these licensing breaks, pet owners must voluntarily license their pets. If
citizens are stopped by an officer and their pet is unlicensed, they will receive a $250 fine.

Animal & Bylaw Services urges Calgarians to take advantage of these financial breaks and protect their pets by purchasing a license. A pet license is peace of mind for owners because if their pet gets lost or gets out of their house, the license is the pet’s ticket back home to his/her loving family.

Animal & Bylaw Services have the animals checked by a veterinarian for obvious health and behavioral problems. Volunteers work with the animals to keep them happy and socialized.

have you ever thought of that maybe people who would abandon a pet wouldn’t want you to return it back?
