Mike Williamson, head coach of the Calgary Hitmen, addresses minor hockey coaches at NSD facility on Flint Road SE

The annual Coaching Day in Alberta kicked off this weekend at the National Development Sports Center on Flint Road SE. Minor hockey coaches from across the city and throughout Southern Alberta took part in the clinic, which featured top coaches and athletic trainers of pro players and teams.
Calgary Hitmen head coach, Mike Williamson, talked to the crowd of approximately 200 coaches about a variety of issues, including team building skills and proper practice techniques. Mr. Williamson said it was important to have coaches and trainers from high levels of hockey passing on knowledge so that minor hockey coaches can pass the message on to their players.
The Saturday portion of the seminar was mainly focused on dry land training and the importance of proper nutrition for minor hockey players. The day also included speakers from National Sports Development Center, Hockey Alberta, and Hockey Canada talking about everything from the different paths players can take from minor hockey to the professional ranks to developing power skating skills.
The Sunday portion of the workshop allowed coaches a chance to watch a Flames practice and see how professional players perfect their skills during practice time. The second day of the clinic also gave participants a chance to hear from Calgary Flames staff, as they shared their tips and tricks on how to get the best results from the players, using special techniques such video analysis.
The clinic concluded with the coaches taking part in a tour of the Saddledome as well as the opportunity to bring their minor hockey teams to watch the Hitmen game Sunday night.
