About two weeks ago news media outlets ran stories about a Calgary family who negotiated for their kids a reprieve from homework. Apparently, the kids will be expected to do their work in class and only be marked on what they complete in class. They will be expected to prep for tests and quizzes at home though. Some pundits have been singing the praises of the challenge to the homework policy. Continue Reading

Calgary Police Service District 6
District 6 frequently has a high number of car prowlings, so if you own a vehicle and live in the area remember to lock your doors or park in a garage if possible. The district area covers Riverbend in the east, and its boundaries are Anderson Road to the south and the downtown core to the north. From November 15 to November 22, there were 64 reported crimes in the area, a significant increase from the week prior. Car prowlings were the most common crime, followed by vehicle thefts. Earlier this month I had the painful experience that most people will participate in at one time of their lives, the death of a parent. My father had been very sick for a very long time, so when his time came it was not a surprise. The emotional pain was still a shock, but with time we all heal. Shad Meshad is in a frantic rush. In a brief, out-of-breath phone conversation, he says, “I’m ‘booking,’ and trying to make a plane.” Meshad isn’t being brusque or rude. It’s just that he’s in a hurry. In fact, he’s always in a hurry — moving and talking at warp speed. Call him on his cell phone, and his assertive, staccato-like voice, slowed slightly by an Alabama drawl, compels callers to pick up the beat and say what they have to say, pronto. Continue Reading
