Troy Media — As combines mowed farmers’ fields across Canadian prairies this fall, there was a scene near Edmonton right out of a time warp: – a crew of workers actually using their hands to harvest plants. The workers were taking down three-metre-tall hemp plants at a breeding nursery outside of Vegreville, AB. The plants, which dwarfed the workers, were being bundled, numbered, bagged and transported to researchers, who see a high-tech future for the ancient plant. Continue Reading

Greg Johnston, tech columnist
Last week saw lots of excitement in the world of computer tech. Microsoft’s Windows 7 rollout was of course the big news, and there is some anticipation it might spike PC sales at least a bit as some potential buyers may have been putting off new PC purchases to avoid machines with Vista pre-installed. Apple has been leveraging the Windows 7 launch, trying to take some of the shine off Microsoft’s rollout with some hard hitting “Buy a Mac” commercials – I’ve seen three new ones this past week, and I hardly watch any TV. Police want to question this man in the robbery of the Ogden Legion
A thief who pulled out two handguns while robbing the Ogden Legion a year ago still hasn’t been caught and Calgary police have released a surveillance photo from the robbery in hopes of identifying the suspect. On Oct. 3, 2008, at approximately 11:10 p.m., a man entered the Ogden Legion in the 2000 block of 78 Avenue S.E. and demanded money from the till. The offender then drew the handguns from his hoodie pockets and fired several shots. Continue Reading

Yesterday afternoon I spent an interesting 90 minutes listening to three lawyers debate the “tension” between protecting freedom of speech and preventing discrimination that is inherent to Alberta’s human rights legislation. The lecture theatre was mostly filled with students as far as I could tell. As the editorialist for SECN, I had a practical reason for attending, beside covering the debate as a news story. Troy Media – By Robert Roach
While Canadians were briefly distracted by the threat of an unwanted federal election, a groundbreaking change was being initiated in the western part of the country. British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan signed the Western Economic Partnership on September 11, 2009, and by so doing, set a high bar for the rest of the country. Continue Reading

Troy Media – By Dr. Stephen Murgatroyd
US President Barack Obama is looking increasingly like the rookie Senator from Chicago acting in the role of President. Despite the hoopla and ballyhoo surrounding his historic election, many now see Obama as “on probation” and the report card shows that he is potentially a failing President. Continue Reading

Tatooed back of Dean Robert Zimmerman
In an unusual move, Calgary police have issued another warning about missing high-risk sex offender Dean Robert Zimmerman. They have released new photographs of Mr. Zimmerman’s extensive tatoos because he may be using truck stop restrooms, a rooming house, youth hostel or other communal showers, and hope that someone may recognize the tattoos.
