Crowds ring bells to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural on 17th Ave. S.E.
Southeast Calgarians turned out for the unveiling of a new mural today in the Greater Forest Lawn area, at an event organized to coincide with the 2009 International Day of Peace. International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) executive director Alison Karim-McSwiney was on hand for the unveiling of the piece, which she said was designed in consultation with local stakeholders.
“It symbolizes all people coming together for harmony and peace,” she said of the mural which was funded through the BRZ.
“We have very good artists working for us. (The murals) are beautiful works of art which add to the vitality and beauty of the area.”
Ward 9 Alderman Joe Ceci was also on hand for the unveiling.
“Yesterday I was at the inauguration of a peace pole in downtown Calgary,” Ald. Ceci said of the pole that was unveiled Sept. 20 in the West Eau Claire area, “but it’s in the west side of town. On the east side of town, we now have an enduring symbol of peace. You don’t have to travel very far to see it.”
A mural entitled "An Allegory of Peace in our Time" is unveiled along International Avenue
Situated on the west side of a brick building facing 39 St. at 17 Ave. S.E., the mural is entitled An Allegory of Peace in our Time by Florence-based artist Martinho Correia. At approximately 2.5 metres by 5 metres the mural is visible to eastbound traffic along the busy 17 Ave corridor, and is the fifth in a series of murals in the area. Mr. Correia is also the artist behind the second mural in the series, located at 3211 17 Ave. S.E. which references the country of Portugal.
Ms. Karim-McSwiney says four additional murals are in the works for the area, with the next mural slated for completion in 2010.
