International food on 17 Avenue SE is the focus of "Around the World in 35 Blocks"

Food lovers in southeast Calgary now have the opportunity to sample a world of culinary pleasures, all within the space of 35 blocks.  The International Avenue Business Revitalization Zone (BRZ) is hosting monthly bus tours which take participants around to a number of businesses along 17th avenue.

Alison Karim-McSwiney, executive director of the BRZ says the tours are a great way for participants to get acquainted with the variety of ethnic products available in the Greater Forest Lawn area.

“We’ll take them to different stores, and they represent different parts of the world,” she says. “For example, we’ll take them to Green Cedars which represents the country of Lebanon.”

Karim-McSwiney says participants will be introduced to the culture represented by each business, and will also get to sample food from various parts of the world.

“We essentially go around the world in 35 blocks. So we’ll go to a Middle Eastern location, we’ll go to an African location,” she says. “We go to a whole bunch of different places and essentially show people the unique products and foods they can find.”

The tours have proved to be rather popular, with the September and October dates already selling out. The next available tour will take place on Nov. 28.
