DEFENDING THE INDEFENSIBLE: SWINTONS SHOULD TAKE DOWN THE MURAL

By Markham Hislop, Editor

By Markham Hislop, Editor

Markham’s Media Rule #16: if the media is stampeding in one direction on a story, take a closer look, there’s usually a good case to be made for the other side.  So it is with the furor over the mural Swinton’s Art Supply & Instruction plastered over its front window.  City Hall wants the business to take it down, Swintons already spent $10,000 plus putting it up, people like it (heck, I like it) and the bureaucrats in charge look petty and mean-spirited. DON'T STOP AT BANNING BOOKS, BURN THEM AND HOLD A WIENIE ROAST!

Dale Wallace

Dale Wallace

As the new school year begins the question of which books should be banned from school curriculums begins as well. It seems that in the city of Brampton, Ontario a high school principal removed Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird from grade 10 English courses because the word “nigger” (which from now on will be referred to as the-word-which-shall-not-be-spoken) is used in the book. I think it’s time Canadian citizens take a stand; our kids need to be protected from truth and the stark realities of life. Continue Reading

Greg Johnston, tech columnist

Greg Johnston, tech columnist

As summer winds down and we move into autumn, this week finds Calgarians already sending their kids back to school in the Public and Catholic school systems, to be followed shortly by university and college students.  Autumn is a time of transition and change, and a time of purchasing back-to-school supplies – which for many households may include a computer purchase.  This fall, both Apple and Microsoft are debuting new versions of their operating systems, the software that runs the computer and provides the “user experience” – which both companies want to enhance.
