VIDEO: LOCAL RACERS ARE HURTING, BUT STILL IN THE HUNT AT SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP

Clint McBain is in the hunt for the Superbike Championship at Race City this weekend

Local racers are putting on a great show at the Parts Canada Superbike Championship at Race City this weekend.  Cochrane’s Clint McBain finished the Saturday morning pre-qualifying round up one position to fourth after yesterday’s practice session.  Mr. McBain is the top local rider and the defending champion of this event.

Calgary fan favourite Mike Zottmann finished fourth Friday, but a spectacular crash near the end of the day demolished his bike and left Mr. Zottmann with multiple injuries that hampered his performance today.  Painkillers can only mask so much and with two broken bones in his foot, damaged ligaments in his chest and soft tissue injuries to his upper body, Mr. Zottmann is lucky to be racing, let alone in contention.

Other local racers with an outside chance of finishing on the podium include Dave Stokowski (10th this morning) and Coaldale’s Royce McLean (12th this morning).  Brad Gavey expected to finish higher than 18th, but mechanical problems and a broken right hand suffered during a CMRA event two weeks ago have hampered his performance.

But the big story continues to be the battle between series frontrunner Brett McCormick and long-time champion Jordan Szoke.

Mr. Szoke vowed Friday to run his best at Race City, where he holds the record with eight wins, and regain the lead from Mr. McCormick.  Yesterday he put his stamp on the track, finishing with the day’s best time, just ahead of Mr. McCormick.

That all changed this morning, as the two riders swapped places once again, with Mr. McCormick running a best of 01:15.079, a considerable lead over Mr. Szoke’s 01:15.413.

Aside from the natural rivalry that stems from being the two top riders in the series this year, there appears to be some personal bitterness as a result of Mr. McCormick’s departure this year from Team Kawaskai, Mr. Szoke’s team, for the Suzuki team.

At 2:25 this afternoon the racers are on the track again, this time to qualify for the Inside Motorcycles Pole Position Award.
