Even the police are horrified by the callous and brutal mugging of a 92-year old woman in the north parking lot of the Southcentre Mall Thursday morning. The victim was rushed to hospital with a concussion and what may be a fractured pelvis or hip.
Witnesses describe the attackers as two women in their early 20s. One is slim-build with brown hair and the other is heavy-set build, also with brown hair.
The victim lives nearby and was walking to the mall through the north parking lot, near the Shoppers Drug Mart entrance, around 9:30 a.m. Police say she walks frequently and was fit for her age.
She had wrapped her purse handle around her arm, a common defense against purse snatchers. The two attackers approached her and tried to wrestle the purse from her grasp.
When the victim refused to let go, the young women knocked her down and began punching and kicking her. When shoppers noticed the commotion and rushed to the elderly woman’s aid, the younger women jumped into a blue sub-compact car, like a Honda Civic, and fled, police say.
According to Duty Inspector Rob Williams, witnesses were not able to get a good look at the vehicle’s licence plate or at the vehicle itself. He says this attack was an isolated incident and there have not been similar muggings reported at the mall or in the area.
Calgary police flooded the area with officers, but were not able to find the car or the female assailants. They are asking anyone with information about the attack or the attackers to contact the Calgary Police Service at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222 -8477.
