Ric McIver doesn’t have much free time. His day job as alderman for Ward 12 in southeast Calgary keeps him pretty busy. But when he does have a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of City Hall, he likes to don the leathers and head out on the open road astride his trusty motorcycle.
This weekend Ald. McIver will be combining his love of biking with fund-raising for children’s cancer research by participating in the Trico Homes Ride for a Lifetime in support of Kids Cancer Care Foundation of Alberta.
Along with hundreds of other Calgary motorcycle enthusiasts, Friday morning he will embark on a three day jaunt through the beautiful B.C. interior, traversing a route that will take him Cranbrook and Nelson, before returning home to Calgary.
“The trip is a great ride and a great time with great people,” he says, “But the real benefit is raising money for cancer research. Kids and cancer do not belong in the same sentence. The good news is that 75 per cent live today when 75 per cent died only a few years ago.”
The Kids Cancer Care Foundation funds basic scientific research into childhood cancer.
For instance, the Foundation provided a three-year, $150,000 research grant to Dr. Peter Forsyth of the University of Calgary and Tom Baker Cancer Centre to investigate using viruses to attack brain cancers.
The Foundation also funds weekend and summer camps for kids with cancer. The camps are a welcome and needed respite for the family of kids fighting cancer.
The cost of the three-day fund-raising trek is borne by each rider. They raise money by soliciting pledges. You can pledge to support Ald. McIver’s ride online.
