CMRA race school students come out of a turn Sunday at Race City

The Calgary Motorcycle Racing Association held its annual racing school at Race City Sunday.  About 50 local bike owners brought out their rides to learn the basics of motorcycle racing and qualify for their novice licence.

Classroom instruction was held Friday evening at the Cardel Theatre and covered racing theory, as well as bike and rider preparation.  While riders were encouraged to bring their street motorcycles, there were some important modification required before heading out on the track, such as draining the anti-freeze and removing or taping up glass instruments, mirrors and signal lights.

Head Instructor Brad Gavey estimates half of the school attendees will actually race during the 2009 season.  Riders seriously bitten by the racing bug can progress through the ranks until they eventually race professionally in events such as the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, which will hold Round 3 at Race City June 25 – 28.

The CMRA school concluded with two “mock races” to give the students a taste of real competition.

The CMRA season begins May 23 – 24 with Round 1 of regional competition.
