While the City of Calgary is patting itself on the back after a survey that shows many Calgarians support Plan It Calgary, the municipality’s long-term development and transportation plan, one of its own elected officials says the document needs more work.
A survey was recently undertaken on behalf of the Canadian Homebuilders Association and the Calgary Urban Development Institute (UDI). Results show Calgarians like single family homes and transit-oriented development.
“Plan It Calgary is about adding housing choices; it is not about stopping future development of single family homes. Single family homes will continue to be the choice of many Calgarians for a long time. Plan It supports that and it encourages more innovation in housing types throughout the city,” said Pat Gordon, Project Manager, Sustainable City Program.
“We are encouraged by the overwhelming public support for a more sustainable Calgary in the future,” Gordon said.
The City says that the survey “reveals an exceptionally high level of awareness exists around long-range planning, development and growth issues generally, and about Plan It, specifically.”
The City claims Calgarians are aware of Plan It because of the “extensive consultation and engagement activities The City has undertaken over the past three years to ensure the views of Calgarians were heard.”
Ald. Ric McIver, Ward 12, begs to differ. In an exclusive SECN interview, Ald. McIver says that while many of the general principles set out in Plan It are fine, the plan flounders in the details.
For instance, he says Plan It suggests the City will be able to dictate what types of products Calgary businesses will be able to sell.
He claims the document is too vague in some areas and far too “prescriptive” in others. Ald. McIver says the feedback he is getting from taxpayers and businesses is not nearly as positive as the responses the City administration says it is receiving.
Plan It will go before the Calgary Planning Commission on May 14th. Further information and the draft version of Plan It are available at www.calgary.ca/planit.
