The ink is barely dry on a tentative agreement between the Tsuu T’sina First Nation and the Alberta government and already nervous Nellies on City Council are looking for alternatives if the Band doesn’t approve the deal, according to Ald. Ric McIver. He says several of his Council colleagues are talking about a “Plan B” and they should stop it immediately before they jeorpardize the agreement.
The Province and the Tsuu T’sina recently concluded negotiations on land for the western leg of the Calgary ring road. The First Nation will reportedly receive land and an undisclosed sum of money in return.
Band members will vote on the deal on Treaty Day, June 30. Not all members like giving up some reserve land. They think it’s a bad deal.
It is those voters the Ward 12 alderman is worried may scuttle the agreement if the City sends out the wrong message over the next few months. He says the City has a great deal to gain and much to lose if loose lips in Council sink this particular ship.
Liberal Transportation Critic Darshan Kang is reported by the Herald saying he thinks the Province and the City need a Plan B if the Tsuu T’Sina vote no.
Ald. McIver says several of Council members (he delcines to name them) have picked up on the Plan B idea and are promoting it withi the City.
Any talk of alternatives is risky, he says, because it could undermine the Tsuu T’sina deal, presumably by giving opposed voters comfort that the ring road could be saved if they vote against it.
He has stern words for those aldermen: stop talking about Plan B and get on board with the existing deal.
