Friday night at 7:19pm, fire crews responded to a reported alarm at Canada Bread Limited, 4320 80th Avenue SE. Upon arrival, the firemen were notified that there was a natural gas leak inside the building.
Fire crews determined that a three-quarter inch natural gas line was broken and was flowing gas inside the building. The line was feeding an overhead heating system and had been broken accidentally by a forklift operator.
Fire crews successfully accessed the gas line valve and shut down the flow, while quickly ventilating the area. ATCO was also called to shut off the main gas feed to the business.
All 37 employees were safely evacuated. One man, the forklift operator, was treated on scene for minor medical issues caused by the inhalation of natural gas. There were no other injuries or health concerns to report.
Firefighters were initially concerned about the level of gas inside the building and the proximity of the line break to the hot ovens. Once the line was shut down, however, the commanding officer confirmed that the building was ventilated and clear of natural gas.
Staff returned to work while fire crews completd their clean up.
