Firefighters, like Boy Scouts, must always be prepared and fortunately for a New Brighton family the men of McKenzie Towne Firehall 30 were on their toes Tuesday morning.  Shortly after arriving for their morning shift, a fire crew was dispatched to the 500 block of New Brighton Drive S.E. for a medical assist. En route, firefighters learned they were responding to a home where a woman was in labour.

Upon arrival, the crew of four firefighters met with the father, who took them to a room where the mother was about to give birth. Crews reported that the baby was crowning approximately three inches. Firefighters then began assisting the mother with the imminent birth. As part of the safe delivery, firefighters clamped the umbilical cord, cleared the airway and cleaned the baby before passing her to her mom.

The mother and newborn, which is the couple’s third child, were then taken to hospital.
