OTTAWA UPDATE WITH MP JASON KENNEY

Jason Kenney

Jason Kenney

As many of you know, it has been an eventful winter in Ottawa.  The attempt by the ‘coalition’ of opposition parties in the House of Commons to overturn the election results last December was an unnecessary distraction from what should have been a focus on the real issues of importance to Canadians.

Despite the political games, our government has remained focused on the platform that millions of people across Canada, including the good people of Calgary Southeast, so strongly supported in the last election.  We have been working especially hard to present comprehensive and responsible proposals to deal with the global economic crisis, and we continue to work hard to crack down on violent crime.

On the economic front, we have focused our efforts on preparing a budget that effectively responds to the difficult economic times that we find ourselves in.  We have accelerated investments in modernizing our country’s infrastructure and carefully undertook short-term stimulus measures to help businesses weather the current conditions. We also signed an agreement with the provincial Premiers which will finally make it easier for skilled professionals to work in any of the provinces.  This will go a long way in reducing the shortages of trades people and medical professionals in Calgary and across Canada.

Many of the initiatives in the 2008 budget were actually helping to insulate Canada from some of the more damaging effects of the global financial crisis.  Our tax relief package from late 2007, which included a reduction in the GST and business taxes, helped to stimulate the economy at a critical time. We also introduced the new Tax-Free Savings Account, which is an investment option that I encourage you to use.  You can now deposit $5000 per year, earn interest and keep it, rather than having to give a cut to the federal government.

Our government has also redoubled its efforts to tackle violent crime, which is something that Calgarians have recently witnessed in their own backyards. The recent outbreak of gang violence in the streets of Calgary and other major cities is unacceptable, and reinforces the need for us to get tough on violent criminals.  Unfortunately, we continue to struggle with a Parliamentary opposition that refuses to act.  It is time that they joined us in considering the victims of violent crime first and ensuring that criminals get sentences that match their offences.

Please do not hesitate to contact my office with any comments and concerns. In the meantime, I would like to wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2009.

The Conservatives are only making this change in policy because of political pressure on them by citizens and the political opposition. They would have been marrily running our economy into the ground if it wasn’t for others.
