Ald. Linda Fox-Mellway and Brian Pincott voted against Monday’s motion to extend Race City’s lease for another five years. They must have felt the wrath of Race City supporters because both have issued written explanations for voting as they did. Kudos to them for publicly defending their vote. Would that all elected officials had that much courage. Continue Reading

As many of you know, it has been an eventful winter in Ottawa. The attempt by the ‘coalition’ of opposition parties in the House of Commons to overturn the election results last December was an unnecessary distraction from what should have been a focus on the real issues of importance to Canadians. Yesterday, I interviewed Ald. Brian Pincott about the email he sent to constituents explaining why he voted nay at Monday’s City Council meeting on the motion to extend Race City’s lease. At one point, after five minutes of my vigorous questioning, Ald. Pincott asked me if I was a reporter or an advocate (he had never been interviewed by SECN before and didn’t know me from Adam). Fire station 30 in McKenzie Towne
Firefighters, like Boy Scouts, must always be prepared and fortunately for a New Brighton family the men of McKenzie Towne Firehall 30 were on their toes Tuesday morning. En route, firefighters learned they were responding to a home where a woman was in labour. Continue Reading

Readers have requested the votes of City Council last night on the motion to extend the Race City lease to 2015. Council votes are included in the minutes, which are usually posted to the City’s web site later in the week. However, this was a recorded vote and the City Clerk’s office emailed me the results. After City Council’s decision yesterday to not pass Ald. Ric McIver’s motion to extend Race City’s lease, there was talk about losing the battle but winning the war. For the race track’s supporters this is the correct attitude. It’s not too late. There is still much that can be done. Continue Reading
